Rough Cuts Open Mic on April 2nd

The 1st Wednesday is days away, which means it is time for Rough Cuts. The details follow but first I want to thank the 100+ filmmakers that have shown up for the events this winter. Last month we skipped the screening but had a lot of awesome conversations and I got to meet many people I only know from the internet. This month we are screening projects like usual, I am always amazed by the films we get to show, the talented filmmakers, and the insightful feedback you give each other. You are building a community, that is rare, authentic, truly unique, and a genuinely powerful tool for everyone involved. I'm glad you are here.

Thank you for showing up for each other, and for whatever films we play this week. Thanks for being a part of this. It is nothing without you.

Our awesome location, called HUDDLE, is a new community event space brought to you by the good folks at J2. Thank you to @coling and @LiamNielsenshultz for being the hosts and also incredible filmmakers.

We are looking to add more photos to our slideshow, it would be great if you chipped in some of your personal behind the scenes photos.

How a Rough Cuts Screening Works.

At our monthly screenings, we show the work of people who are right there in the room with us. We usually show up to 8 short films (under 10 minutes), with half the spots reserved for minority filmmakers. This space thrives on diverse voices, styles, and skill levels—so whether you're a seasoned pro or just picking up a camera, this is for you.

We hope to watch your work this month! Here’s how it works:
🎥 You get a total of 15 minutes—so you can screen a 4-minute piece and have 11 minutes of feedback, or play a 10-minute cut and chat for 5. Unfinished work is welcome (and encouraged!). Rough Cuts is a place to experiment, test ideas, and grow.

And even if your film isn’t screened this time, your presence still matters. The feedback and ideas from the audience are what make these nights so special.

There’s no cost and no RSVP required—just come through. Bring a friend, bring your questions, bring your weird ideas. And if you’ve got any questions, feel free to reply to this email.

See you on Wednesday,

Nic + Ryan
